Gertrude Apel Pioneering Spirit Award
In 1930, during a period of major economic depression, Rev. Gertrude Apel was the first General Secretary of what would become the Church Council of Greater Seattle. In a time when women did not “lead” organizations, Rev. Apel was a tireless ecumenical leader and an amazing organizer. She had a talent for fostering cooperation and always getting things done.
This year we honor and remember her by awarding two Gertrude Apel Pioneering Spirit awards: the third annual to an individual(s) and the second annual to a congregation or organization. Previous awardees include Rev. Jon and Juni Nelson (2009), Fr. Tony Haycock (2010), and Seattle Mennonite Church (2010).
Thank you for all your nominations for the Gertrude Apel Pioneering Spirit Award. The Church Council of Greater Seattle is honored to award the Rev. Rich Lang and Skyway United Methodist Church led by the Rev. Steve Baber with the 2011 Gertrude Apel Pioneering Spirit Award. The awardees will receive their awards at our fall dinner on Thursday, September 29th.
