The Church Council of Greater Seattle is honored to award the second congregational Gertrude Apel Pioneering Spirit Award to Skyway United Methodist Church, led by the Reverend Steve Baber.
Skyway United Methodist Church, led by the Reverend Steve Baber, is at the center of the Spirit-filled community-building which is transforming the unincorporated Skyway area of Martin Luther King, Jr. County. The church's work with youth, mentors and parents, developed in relationship with the groundbreaking work of Pastor Baber as a co-founder of the 4C Coalition has laid a foundation for this and future generations. The church has provided essential leadership for the fulfillment of the vision of the Equity and Social Justice Initiative of King County by "walking the talk" over many years, including working with the A. Philip Randolph Institute for the organization of Skyway Solutions, a community agenda for revitalization.
